The Barry Sisters: Yidl Mitn Fidl
The Barry Sisters
Here are some songs from the classic Yiddish film, Yidl Mitn Fidl (1936), or Yiddle With His Fiddle, starring Molly Picon, Max Bozyk and Leon Liebgold. This is sung in Yiddish and English in the swinging klezmer style of The Barry Sisters.
The film was written and directed by Joseph Green, based on the novel by Konrad Tom, and quickly became one of the most successful Yiddish films of all time. The film was shot on location in Kazimierz, Poland, where local shtetl inhabitants were extras. The film's score was composed by Abraham Ellstein, and the lyrics to the songs were written by Itzik Manger.
A fine review of the film is found at Central Europe Review (Feb 15, 1999): Fiddling in the Face of Adversity by Andrew J Horton.
Joseph Green (April 23, 1900 – June 20, 1996) was born Yoysef Grinberg, a Polish-born Jew from Łódź, Poland. He emigrated to the United States in 1924, where he soon became an actor in the Yiddish theater in New York City during its second golden era.
