A Very Short Story

Not So Long Ago

Once upon a time in a land far, far, far away, writers, artists, intellectuals and other original thinkers & scientists were not only appreciated but their works were also studied, discussed and collected. Everyone had an opinion; the air polluted with argument and debate, and often accompanied by the smells of cigarette smoke and the sound of clinking glasses. Then a catastrophe befell the land, and the thinkers, artists and writers were banished. The people wondered what would happen next. In came the hordes of  young and energetic bankers, businessmen, entrepreneurs, sports heroes and pop entertainers, both singer and scientist, who were soon lauded and embraced by the people. There was prosperity; there was entertainment; there were good times. And lots of wealth. And lots of new multiplexes in malls. And lots of new condo projects. Everyone was happy. The End.

For my children and grandchildren.
