Aretha Franklin: I Say A Little Prayer (1968)

Soul Music

This is track no. 2 on Aretha Now, Aretha Franklin’s 15th studio album, released by Atlantic Records on June 14, 1968. Franklin achieved the status of “Queen of Soul” by the end of the 1960s. You can see and feel the power of gospel music in her singing, having grown up and been influenced by this style of music in her formative years while residing in the American South. You can view Aretha Franklin perform live versions here and here.

And if there is still any lingering doubt about Aretha, take a look at this video clip, where she sings “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”—as a tribute to one of the honorees, Carole King, who wrote the song—at the 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors, held on December 6th, 2015, in Washington. All I can say is “Wow, what Soul.”

I Say A Little Prayer
By Burt Bacharach and Hal David

The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup
I say a little pray for you
While combing my hair now
And wondering what dress to wear now
I say a little prayer for you

Forever and ever, you’ll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I love you
Together, forever, that’s how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartbreak for me

I run for the bus, dear
While riding I think of us, dear
I say a little prayer for you
At work I just take time
And all through my coffee break time
I say a little prayer for you

Forever and ever, you’ll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever we never will part
Oh, how I’ll love you
Together, forever, that’s how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartbreak for me

I say a little prayer for you
I say a little prayer for you

My darling, believe me
(Believe me)
For me there is no one but you
Please love me too
(Answer my prayer)
And I’m in love with you
(Answer my prayer)
Answer my prayer now, babe
(Answer my prayer)

Forever and ever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, forever, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartbreak for me
